Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How far are you from the beach?

We are 4 houses from the Lake trail at Emerald Bay in the Palisades area of Lake Arrowhead Woods. We are about 4 miles from Burnt Mill Beach Club and 3 miles from Tavern Bay Beach Club.

2. What amenities do the beach clubs offer?

Tavern Bay Beach Club: Sandy beach, large roped off swim area, swing set & play equipment, restrooms, parking, picnic tables, some shade, snack bar ($2 hot dogs, nachos, $1 ice cream, soda, candy from 10 cents to $1). There are a limited number of lounge chairs if you're early. Can get windy, this is a great beach on hot days. See photos on Local Information Page. You may bring inflatable toys. This beach is more fun for teens due to the larger swimming area and snack bar. You may take our striped beach towels to the beach.

Burnt Mill Beach Club: Sandy beach, roped off swim area, swing set, play equipment, restrooms, parking very close to sandy area, picnic tables, shade trees, attendant who can sell you snacks from a refrigerator. There are a limited number of lounge chairs if you're early. On a cool day, this is a warmer beach and less windy than Tavern Bay. See photos on Local Information Page. You may bring inflatable toys. This beach is more fun for small children as it has a shallower, smaller swim area, and has more shade. You may take our striped beach towels to the beach.

3. Can we bring our own boat?

Only boats registered to homeowners may be used on Lake Arrowhead, including kayaks. No jetskis are permitted at all on Lake Arrowhead. Ask us about where to go for boating.

4. How bad is the traffic noise from Hwy 173?

You can hear traffic from Hwy 173, but most "city folks" don't notice! Weekends obviously have higher traffic times. Lake Arrowhead is quiet at night. Increased noise from boats and cars is the price you pay for being close to the lake, but the advantage includes having the Jensen's Mini Mart in walking distance. See the photo on our home page of the distance to Hwy 173.

5. How many stairs are there?

Five steps to the back door, which is the entry from the garage. This is a 2-story home, with a queen bedroom and full bath downstairs.

6. What makes Lake Arrowhead different from Big Bear?

  • Big Bear is a longer, windier drive from Los Angeles and Orange County if you tend to have motion sickness.
  • Most of the drive to Lake Arrowhead is a 4 lane 55 mph drive. The Drive to Big Bear from the bottom of the mountain is about an hour.
  • Big Bear is a city in the mountains. Lake Arrowhead is a smaller, more "mountainy" community with no signals and no 4-lane roads.
  • Big Bear has more shopping opportunities, but Lake Arrowhead is known for the outlet center and local antiqueing.
  • Lake Arrowhead is a private lake, open only to homeowners and their guests, while Big Bear is a public lake open to anyone.
  • Lake Arrowhead has a higher median income.
  • Lake Arrowhead is 20 minutes from skiing, Big Bear is much closer.
  • Big Bear is a higher elevation, usually meaning more snow, more chain requirements in the winter, and because of the topography, Big Bear seems to have greater temperature extremes--hotter in summer and colder in winter. This is not an issue when it comes to snow for skiing at Snow Valley since they usually begin snowmaking in November.
  • While Big Bear is only 30 miles from Lake Arrowhead, it is usually a 1 hour windy drive.

7. Where can we take our jet skis and boat?

Our driveway is not conducive to parking a trailer.

You can jet ski and boat on Silverwood Lake (about 25 miles) or Big Bear (about an hour).

8. Can we rent a boat somewhere?

Yes!

a) You can charter a boat through MacKenzie Water Ski School (see Info page for more information, including link and phone number). We have had guests use them and enjoy their adventure.

b) You can take a sight-seeing ride on the Lake Arrowhead Queen--buy tickets at LeRoy's on the water in the Village.

c) You can rent a rowboat at Lake Gregory Regional Park (and a battery-powered motor at additional cost)

d) You can rent a motor boat on Silverwood Lake.

9. Can we have an online map link?

Some of the on-line maps (such as Google) are based on 15-year-old maps! E-mail me for a link that is relatively decent.

10. My pets are well-behaved, can we please bring them?

Yes! You may bring 1-2 well-behaved pets with you for an additional fee per night and a $50 increase in your security/damage deposit. See our pet agreement. If you cannot tolerate pet allergies, please check our Treehouse Escape home for a home as close to allergy-free as you can get in the mountains! You may not leave your pets home unattended.
